Ditch the car and get a Bike

MOTORISTS are so fed up with congestion, petrol prices and parking shortages that an increasing number are considering changing to motorbikes and scooters, according to a new study.

Motorcycle Council of NSW research shows 20 per cent of motorists in NSW would consider making the switch to a scooter or motorbike.

However it said a key reason holding them back was that motorcycles were charged the same motorway tolls as cars and this was unreasonable.

Motorcycle Council chairman Guy Stanford said the tolls should be reduced.

“Scooters and motorcycles have a smaller environmental footprint in terms of manufacturing, fuel usage, emissions, space, occupancy and recyclability,” he said.

The call came as more than 450 motorcycles hit town yesterday for the annual Sydney Motorcycle Show at Olympic Park.

According to figures provided by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, motorcycle sales were up 46.2 per cent this year.

Road bike sales, including scooters, rose by 22.3 per cent.

This is the fifth year for the bike show and also marks the fifth year in a row motorcycle sales have reached a record high.
